Historic Footbal 24/06/2009
Four teams of 27 youths each face each other during the famous “Calcio Storico”, Historic Football, the incredible and exciting Florentine 15th-century style tournament of fighting and football held against the spectacular backdrop of Piazza Santa Croce.
In past times, this Roman ball sport, which went on to become a Florentine tradition during the cities golden age as the Tuscan capital, was played by noblemen to prove their own skill and strength to the watching damsels. Today, it is now ferociously fought between young men of four Florentine quarters: San Giovanni, Santa Maria Novella, Santo Spirito and Santa Croce.

Team members wear medieval garters and pantaloons attack each other to seize the ball and put it in the net (which runs the entire width of the pitch) by whatever means available. The winners are rewarded with a calf, which was historically butchered for the occasion.

Gian Lorenzo Bernini and the birth of the Boroque portrait 03/04/2009
At Bargello National Museum a tribute will be paid to an important artist, Gian Lorenzo Bardini; innovative in the field of sculpture during the Renaissance period. The exhibition is divided into two sections, each displayed in their own unique room:

1) Bernini the Portraitist: the beginning and rise
2) The “Talking Portraits” (1630-1640)

The portrait sculpture was conceived in the sixteenth century mainly as a state-portrait with a strong official connection. Thanks to Bernini, it progresses from stern and stiffly formal images to figures which seem to breathe and even talk to the spectator. They are the so-called “talking portraits”.

The Florence show therefore sheds light on the most significant phase of the artist’s self-portrait period, the one of his full mastery, represented by Costanza Bonarelli, the Portraits of Urban VIII and of Scipione Borghese, and of other personages of the papal court.

Memories of Antiquity in Twentieth -Century art 14/03/2009
More than 130 works of art on display. This exhibition draws ever closer and compares ancient art and twentieth-century art, focusing on paintings and sculptures with origins in the periods of Etruscans, to Medieval, and through through to the Renaissance. Featuring artists from Picasso to Dalì, Modigliani, Carrà, De Chirico, and Franco Angeli.

The exhibition aims to visually represent and communicate the innovative force, revolutionary impact and great expressiveness of twentieth-century art, and is juxtaposed by historical Neoclassicism.

Already present in Picasso’s works from the early 20th century, the return to the origins became a creative drive also for a generation of Italian artists. After the disruptive experiences at the turn of the century, Carrà, Severini, Soffici, De Chirico, Morandi, and Modigliani indeed chose this road to reconnect with its roots and its traditions.

A PIAZZA FOR ALL SEASONS - SANTA CROCE 08/07/2006
Throughout the year quite a number of recreational activities are hosted in this beautiful piazza, to name a few:

June saw the setting up of the playing field for the Medieval Soccer competition, which incidentally was cancelled due to the animosity existing between the teams!

Leading up to Christmas, the German Christmas Fair, there are many stalls where one can buy
typical gifts and enjoy wurstel and sauerkraut, mulled wine or a beer in the carousel pub.

On another occasion, during the winter Santa Croce becomes an open-air ice-skating rink.
